Wondering what the difference is between Professional Supervision and Coaching?

  • Essentially: supervision is work-contextualised and coaching is individual-contextualised

  • While reflective supervision involves you in both a personal and professional sense, it’s actually about helping you achieve a deeper understanding, build skills/strengths, or reach a more fulfilled approach to work so that your helping effectiveness is increased

  • Coaching is about helping you achieve a deeper understanding, build skills/strengths, or reach a more fulfilled approach to life so that you can achieve meaningful goals (some of which may be work-related, but not always)

  • Supervision tends to be regular and ongoing, because our professional role is regular and ongoing, whereas coaching sessions are generally focussed on a specific goal so may be single, a series of sessions, or ongoing with different goals each time

  • There is significant crossover, and many coaching approaches may be used in supervision sessions

Wondering which option might suit you best?

  • If you’re primarily after work-related reflection and a better understanding about how your work impacts on you as well as how you impact on your work, then Professional Supervision is likely what you’re after

  • If you’re looking for help in better understanding who you are as a person, how to build on or better utilise your strengths, or how you might achieve a particular goal or pursue a particular direction, then Coaching is likely what you’re after

  • If you prefer conversation face-to-face and the opportunity to work through things in discussion, then meeting in-person or online via zoom may suit you best

  • If you prefer time to work through things and explore resources with self-reflection, or you find writing helps you process more effectively, then you may prefer a series of email sessions to prompt and provide feedback
